The former GFA president Kwesi Nyantakyi was spotted at the just ended GFA elections that took place on the 25th October 2019 and may have influenced the outcome. The world football governing body FIFA had banned him for life from all football-related activities. He was also fined 500,000 Swiss Francs for breaching various FIFA ethics and for conflict of interest.
The investigation titled Number 12 by ace investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, captured a number of corrupt activities by referees and some football administrators. In this investigation, he was also captured and that led to his ban by FIFA.
In the 25-10-2019 edition of Joy News Prime at 7:00 pm, Gary Al-Smith, one of the Joy Sports team revealed that Kwesi Nyantakyi was in attendance but outside of the building and may have played a role in the outcome. Israel the presenter of the news was surprised and below is the conversation that ensued between him and Gary.
Gary Al-Smith: “…We are told that there was a meeting between Kurt Okraku and Palmer and the former GFA president who was the power broker. Mr Nyantakyi has loomed large and what we can learn from this is that he is still the most powerful person in Ghana football”.
Israel Laryea: Really?
Gary: Yes, today, he was at the GFA elections grounds.
Israel Laryea: He was?
Gary: Yes.
Israel Laryea: Oh, you saw him?
Gary: He was there, but outside, he was not inside the premises, but he was there. After the first round of votes, when Kurt Okraku had 44 and George Afriyie had 40, Kurt Okraku went out and begged Mr Nyantakyi and after that, he got 59 votes and that…”
Mr. Nyantakyi may have still influenced this election and thus, Ghana football is still in Mr Nyantakyi’s pocket.
