Navro-Pungu’s Pride: How Bright Awelana Bakiweyem Became UCC’s Best Graduating Mathematics Education Student.

From struggling in primary school to becoming the best graduating Bachelor of Education Mathematics student, Bright Awelana Bakiweyem’s story is one of perseverance, hard work, and dedication.

Born and raised in Navrongo-Pungu, Bakiweyem attended Wusungu Primary School where he faced several challenges, including being demoted more than three times in primary one and two. He struggled to cope with his peers as he was weak in English and couldn’t speak his native language, Kasem, in school. Mathematics was also not his strong suit.

Despite these challenges, Bakiweyem completed his primary education in 2006 and went on to Presby Junior High School in Navrongo through entrance exams. He later gained admission to Navrongo Senior High School (NAVASCO), where he continued to face challenges with mathematics.

However, with the help of his teachers and his brother Paul Aduah, Bakiweyem persevered and eventually got a science and mathematics scholarship, which he received once, and never heard anything about again.

In 2012, tragedy struck when Bakiweyem lost his father a few weeks before his final exams in NAVASCO. Despite this setback, he went on to obtain a Diploma in Basic Education (Maths/Science program) from St. John Boscos College of Education Navrongo, where he graduated with Second Class Honors (Upper Division) and was posted to teach at a remote village.

Bakiweyem taught for two years to satisfy the study leave conditions before pursuing a Bachelor of Education in Mathematics at the University of Cape Coast Ghana. It was here that he met his friend Nero, who challenged him to aim for a first-class degree.

Bakiweyem rose to the challenge, maintaining a first-class grade in all his semesters and earning the hall award for best students in Valco Hall during the Hall week celebration.

In the end, Bakiweyem graduated with First Class Honors with a CGPA of 3.721 and emerged as the Best Graduating Bachelor of Education Mathematics Student in the 3rd session of the 55th congregation.

Today, Bakiweyem is a mathematics teacher at Awe Senior High/Technical School in Navrongo and a runway/fashion model with the Versatile Model Agency.

His story is a testament to the fact that with hard work, perseverance, and determination, anyone can achieve their dreams, no matter how difficult the journey may be.
